🔠Spelling Out OCD - Exposure and Response Prevention therapy (ERP)🔍

🔠Core Concept: OCD doesn't respond well to traditional talk therapy approaches—in fact, these approaches can sometimes make symptoms worse. Clients may engage in verbal rumination, and because OCD symptoms can sound scary or distressing, therapists might unknowingly reinforce the compulsion cycle by providing reassurance as a way to comfort their clients.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapy is a highly effective, evidence-based treatment for OCD. Recently, I heard it referred to as an "art form," and I couldn't agree more. While it may seem straightforward, ERP requires a commitment to the treatment protocol, creativity, on-the-spot thinking, and a therapist’s willingness to hold space for discomfort.

There is some stigma around ERP, with misconceptions that it is harmful or unethical. However, like any therapeutic approach, harm only occurs when it is misapplied. When done correctly, ERP provides relief from the deep pain and isolation that often accompany OCD.

🔠Action Step: If you have a client who may be experiencing OCD, educating them about OCD and its treatment approaches—including ERP—can provide hope. It’s also crucial to understand how ERP differs from traditional talk therapy and how to avoid reinforcing the compulsion cycle with clients.
